Looking after the River Cray

Thames 21 events help protect the environment and safeguard fragile but vital river and wetland ecosystems. They are also a rewarding way to connect with nature and meet new people!

For this task you'll be kitted out with waders so that you can assist with Autumn Reed cutting in shallow water areas, intended to weaken this vigorous plant in order to maintain a greater variety of vegetation types.

There are other tasks too, such as pruning work along open pathways, pollarding sallows (trimming small trees), and some litter picking duties. Thames 21 will provide all the equipment needed, and tea, coffee and biscuits too!

You will need to wear working clothes, adequate sun/rain shower protection and any food and drink that you'll need. As it is wild land there are no toilet facilities on site and the nearest are at shops in Crayford town centre, about 10-15 minutes away.
