About this session

Spend an hour this weekend counting the birds that land in your garden, back yard or local green space, then submit your results to the RSPB. Do it solo or get together with family or friends to do it as group.

It's all part of the RSPB's national Big Birdwatch Weekend: https://www.rspb.org.uk/whats-happening/big-garden-birdwatch

This task is listed for 3pm Sunday but you can choose when you do it anytime on Saturday or Sunday.

This information will give the RSPB an idea of bird populations and which ones may be struggling and need support.

Here's some info from the RSPB:

"Across the UK, over half a million people took part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2023, counting a whopping 9.1 million birds! House Sparrows took the top spot, but counts of these chirpy birds are down by 57% compared to the first Birdwatch in 1979. In fact, we’ve lost 38 million birds from UK skies in the last 60 years. With birds facing so many challenges, it’s more important than ever to get involved in the Birdwatch. Every bird you do – or don’t – count will give us a valuable insight into how garden birds are faring. "

How to take part

1) Sign up to this GG listing 📋.

2) Spend an hour watching the birds in your patch and record the birds that land 🐦🕊️🦅🦆. You can download a pdf guide and tally sheet here:

https://base-prod.rspb-prod.magnolia-platform.com/dam/jcr:705d419d-92a2-4675-8237-6aae0ff23259/BGBW2026_HowToGuides_English_A4_prf1.pdf

Only include birds that land, not those flying over.

3) Submit your results online at https://www.rspb.org.uk/whats-happening/big-garden-birdwatch

Please upload, even if you saw nothing at all. The more results submitted, the better the picture of how garden birds are faring. You have until 18 February 2026 to submit results, so there's no need to do it right away.

4) Complete your GoodGym 'Mission Accomplished' email to log your good deed.

5) Send a photo to bexley@goodgym.org for inclusion in the task report 📷.

Happy bird watching!
