Bird feeders to suet every taste...

After an introduction to the RSPB’s Big Garden Bird Watch event, pupils were keen to make their own bird feeders to entice our feathered friends onto the school grounds.
There were already a few home made seed feeders hanging forlornly from the fence outside the class window...but as they had been neglected, possibly forgotten, no birds had been near them for a while. The children soon put that right, and had them filled and back on the fence in no time. We discussed how important it is to continue to feed the birds, all the way through the winter months.
Next, we looked at a special RSPB inspired apple feeder. Each of the children cored an apple, pushed a twig or pea stick through the side, to act as a perch, attached string for hanging, and added a variety of sunflowers seeds by pushing them into the apple. Very soon, we had about a dozen apple feeders to hang.
Finally, the children took some pine cones and added suet cake between the woody scales, so that they were transformed into unusual, but attractive feeders for the birds.
A huge thank you to the children and Mrs Howard, who did a wonderful job making the feeders, and have pledged to keep feeding the birds, in the weeks to come.
