Fallen Angel
2 GoodGymers made their way to help the Spital Cemetery in Windsor and Maidenhead.

Rachel and Sheila met taskowner Karen at Spital Cemetery for one of their regular maintenance sessions. We took on a new gravestone for this session. A masonary cross had been toppled from its plinth due to the weight of ivy, so we decided to release it from the strangle-hold. As we worked in the sunshine, it became evident that what had looked initially to be a plain cross, was something much more interesting. We gradually revealed a foot, folds of a robe, a hand and eventually a cherubic face. There was a carved angel hidden underneath the ivy. There is more to be done at the next session to fully reveal the carving, but we hope that we get the approval of Ada Pierce (who died in 1906 aged 39), whose life this memorial commemorates
