Having helped out at Foodshare (foodbank) twice before, I was quite keen on volunteering there again now that I have spare time on some Fridays. I arrived early for a solo induction with Chris the manager, and was blown away by the scope of the operations. So many people doing so much work to keep families and people in need, fed. It's impressive, heartwarming and humbling at the same time.
Unlike usual food banks, the Foodshare shop gives customers the ability to choose what they want, instead of receiving pre-packed bags. As a result, the main objective of the shop is to be well stocked and look neat & tidy.
I mostly observed and learnt about the many, many different aspects of donations, sorting, dating, organising, what members can buy, allowed items etc. I shadowed Chris as he picked out items needed for top-up, brought over fruit & veg from the across-the-road storage and stocked a fridge.
Looking forward to more return visits.
