Nothing could have prepared us for the adventure that was tonight's task.
Starting on a quiet Spitalfields street corner, runner, cyclists and walkers arrived one-by-one to our meeting spot, Benk&Bo on Gravel Lane.
This space acts as co-working space; event space and...community garden.
We were taken a few flights up by Freya, our longstanding task owner (previously of Cranbrook Community Garden). Freya introduced us to Ted, who explained the history of the garden, and why having us there helped.
Two teams, two tasks
Teams were divided into two terrific tasks. One team headed to the composting area to sift soil, in order to create fine soil, useful for gardening, and emptying one of the compost bays in the process.
The other team headed to the bamboo planters and proceeded to dig out all the dead bamboo, and transport over to the back of the compost bays.
Shortly after 8pm, we assembled for Task 2: speed harvesting. Teams divided into two to pick chard and tomatoes, and basil. And the best bit? The team were invited to take their pick of these leaves and herbs to take home!
It was a fantastic evening in an incredible spot - and an important area to cultivate...
Task owner Freya explains,
"Middlesex St Estate Community Garden is a crucial biodiversity hub for the City of London.
In a densely developed area of London, this open space is approximately the size of a football field. The residents that set up the space have prioritised planting a wide array of perennial plants, fruit trees, and native shrubs, amongst other botanical and edible varieties, which not only makes for a beautiful urban oasis for residents and vistors, is an oasis for the birds, bees, bugs, and butterflies in the area, who rely on quiet, diverse and flourishing green spaces for food and habitat."
Needless to say we can't wait to return.
Well done everyone, for a productive and fun night out yet again.
Until next time.
