I Want to Mould Your Land
4 GoodGymers made their way 4.6km to help their local community in Newham.
- Wednesday, 29th of June 2016
With Brahma off running his first sub-4 1500m, Simon was covering Newham this evening and was joined by regulars Rodrigo and Alice.
We jogged a scenic route over to Abbey Gardens, an open access harvest garden where people can get involved with communal growing at sessions led by proper gardeners. Aiste greeted and let us know what was what before dashing off to a drawing class. Time to do some good.
Our main job for the evening was to clear a large ditch round the back of the greenhouse of junk and then "re-mould" the land by shifting a large mound of soil.
We found all manner of junk in the ditch: lots of wood, bits of polystyrene, plastic bags, sweet and crisp wrappers, plant pots and quite appropriately lots of beetles.
With the rubbish shifted we got stuck into some shovelling and wheelbarrowing piles and piles of soil from a big mound over to the ditch, taking care not to break a pipe that was running underneath (and had already been broken by a group without "good" in their name earlier in the day...)
To finish off we moved some large sheets of perspex to a secret hidden location so that no passers by would half inch them.
On the way back we visualised helicopters and balloons attached to us, we imagined were running on ice, water and hotplates and we pretended we were ninjas and elite athletes. It's all technically sound, we promise.
Great Gooding. See you soon,
Simon
