It only takes a Minister
2 GoodGymers made their way to help an isolated older person in Southwark.
- Wednesday, 30th of May 2018
Conroy and I met en route to work on Wednesday to help Ms A. She was finding it hard to navigate her small flat which was full of boxes. Unfortunately, after a spate of poor health, she wasn't capable of moving the boxes from her flat to her empty garage (just round the corner) herself.
But this was no ordinary mission. Rather than being left to Conroy and me alone, we were met at Ms A's flat by Ivo, Matt Hancock MP and Harry from Matt's office, who were here to lend a hand and see what GoodGym is all about.
Ms A couldn't have been more pleased to see the motley crew at her door. She certainly showed great appreciation for the strapping young men that accompanied me, and was very complimentary of the whole GoodGym crew; we could all see how much it meant to her to have her flat cleared up.
With five of us put to work, we had cleared the floor of Ms A's flat in no time. It was brilliant to show Mr Hancock first hand the great work that GoodGym does for the community, and also to try and explain how we, as volunteers, have benefitted from the GG experience.
Our new GoodGym volunteers left with Ms A's compliments ringing in their ears and, hopefully, an appreciation of the service that GG provides to the community: volunteers and beneficiaries alike.
