I returned a week after my last Friday post-work shopping for Mr G to collect his usual book of labels and a verbal request for Robinsons Apple & Blackcurrant and something green. Mr G was happy to get anything from the cabbage family except kale, which he had tried for the first time when I bought it last week in the absence of cavolo nero, green cabbage or green leaves.

"I'm never throwing away any food. My mother told me: your father was starving when he was in a prisoner-of-war camp. But that kale you bought me last week - it's in the bin. I cannot stand it, it's too rough."

"Did you cook it?"

"I did. And I just cannot have it. It tastes like... barbed wire!"

Today I delivered savoy cabbage whose appearance Mr G rated top-class. We both agreed that the infamous case of kale was a learning experience. So, dear Mr G shoppers, if you are reading this, learn from my kale-ure and never come back to Mr G with that curly, green monstrosity!
