What a mudheap! Last night’s work-out in the Isle of Dogs was a blast, my arms are really feeling it today. We converged at the usual spot in the reception area of the Reebok Club, and everyone who came along brought some real enthusiasm and a light hearted attitude. That’s what we like to see! 8 strong and determined runners set off at a trot and headed south towards our task – shovelling, barrowing, and spreading out loads of mulch to level out the pig pen at a regular spot of ours, Mudchute Farm.Cressida and Nick welcomed us on arrival, and set us straight down to work. In spite of limited lighting, we got stuck right in and the wheelbarrows began whirling 20 yards across from the compost heap to the pen. It was important for the pigs that we soften up the ground for them, otherwise their weight just can’t take it! Smashing the last GoodGym groups’ record of 44 barrows in 40 minutes (conveniently ignoring the fact that they had to travel slightly further with those barrows), we racked up a grand 60 in 40 minutes, a New World Record! Meanwhile, I was spreading all the mulch on the ground, while the sheep with glow-in-the-dark eyes crept unnervingly up behind me... It is Halloween after all... Rampaging Sheep anyone? No?Thank god it wasn’t raining or we’d all have been stuck in the mud! After giving out our thanks to the Mudchute crew for providing us with a fun job, and vice versa for helping her out, we tidied up tools and carried on our merry way, only after having a little chat with the pigs. It was getting colder, and we didn’t want to stick around and lose all that workout warmth, so back onto the path we went and west along towards Mudchute Docklands station. We set a quicker pace this time and after a little banter along the route, we re-emerged among skyscrapers and bright lights, and canals a plenty. It was awesome to see a whole bunch of new faces and to meet you all; I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did! It’d be great to get a regular bunch of GoodGymmers running in Canary Wharf, so please come again next week! I’ll announce the task in the next few days...
