Despite the sweltering heat, six of us arrived to help out at the beautiful Brixton Windmill. We were treated to drinks on arrival (as well as some rain from a little cloud burst) and then were split into two teams - the Hackers and the Planters.
The Planters needed to add a bit of colour to the allotment area ahead of the Blooming Lambeth awards, as well as some beds in the children's play areas. This involved Laura digging up chard, George arranging an assortment of flowers and Samantha learning lots about planting!
The Hackers, despite their cooler name, had the much sweatier job of having to trim some very overgrown grass at a nearby children's play centre using clippers and scythes. They had a good hour of lopping and chopping and, although they didn't feel like they made much of a difference, Jen, Steve and Catherine managed to clear a good old section of grass and filled multiple bags and wheelbarrows with their efforts.
As we took our obligatory group shot in front of the windmill, we found out that the lovely Annick has been shortlisted for Incredible Edible's Best Volunteer for a Community Growing Space and, based on her patience with us (me!) today, I know I'll be sending a vote her way.
