Making Hay While The Sun Shines
2 GoodGymers made their way to help the Luton Borough Council Parks and Countryside in Luton.
- Saturday, 4th of September 2021
- Led by David Mansfield
Kelvin and David turned up to support the volunteers with TCV and Luton's Parks department with a bit of meadow maintenance at Cowslip Meadow, recently categorised a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its abundance of nature and rare species. A good example of how rewilding parks can bring nature back to urban areas.
First job was to clear all the unwanted yellow-flowered Ragwort plants from the area, which involves lots of bending and pulling hard!
Once cleared, the long grass and wildflowers were strimmed by the pros, and the cuttings raked up into hay bundles.
These bundles will make their way to Monday's task at Peoples Park, where they'll be used to seed the meadow there and enrich it with additional wildflower species, creating another wildlife haven.
